Poem for June
Summertime words for my sweet girl
I’m laying on the bed While you drink intently Three quarters asleep Eyes closed Sucking at the silicone breast Drifting into the world That holds the dreams of the smallest of us You jerk your arms violently Smack me in the nose Yet you never open your eyes You had one of those falling dreams You get them when you just fall asleep Like I used to I don’t anymore Can't even recall the last one I am much too exhausted for that these days But that is okay You settle yourself again Gently kick the blankets off Because you hate to be covered up Especially on hot summer days You turn and sigh Taking in extra oxygen As you yawn like a lion cub You settle again Now you’re fast asleep If angels exist you’re one of them If God lives in us To prove it I have no further to look Than the evidence imprinted in the infinite peace Written in love on your serene face And the way you fill my heart Even while I love so deeply your mother And your sisters and brothers If beauty is in the eye of the beholder Then it is in the eye of any who behold you Your short-bow lips Bedsheet eyelids Soft cheeks the shade of cactus fruit Ears more perfect than your mothers or mine Your nose is also perfect Allowing one miniature breath in and one out Rhythmically Through those tiny nostrils It’s skewed slightly Your nose is Which somehow only makes it Even more perfect Everyone thinks this of their children And everyone is right One year ago You were still in the ocean Protected in those dark waters Where heartbeats and muffled laughter Punctuated the humming silence I know you dreamed then Of what I can only imagine But I know it was beautiful Yet not nearly as beautiful as you Back then We hadn’t yet met you but we knew your name We hadn’t yet seen you but we were already in love Someday you’ll grow up You may be sad or worried Life may weigh you down Like it has weighed me down But you will survive And you will smile On the other side of that sorrow Everything will always be alright At lest eventually Until that sadness reaches you Rest your little head on my chest Be at peace and sleep sweetly Visit that dream world That you’re only a little removed from From that great before In that dark warm ocean Where the eternal you lived Dancing with fairies and magical beings Before your body was sewn together In your mother's womb Sleep sweetly and do not give a care To this cold and confusing world The world will be here for you You will not miss it as it misses you The demons will be conquered The evil men will be destroyed Their screams will be music to the Just Yet none of this is your concern You will not need to worry These things are not for you Not yet In your world of fairies and dreams Play and rest and rejoice You are my daughter You are well loved I will always be here I will always be here for you My sweet little love
